Tyre Disposal – Goldfields & Mid-West

Waste Tyre Disposal for Mine Sites and Regional Businesses

Old tyres are awkward to store and tricky to dispose of. They are also increasingly something head office and environmental managers want moved off site and disposed of responsibly. To solve these challenges and support WA operators, GCW collects and manages waste tyres from mining, industrial and commercial sites across the Goldfields and Mid West.

  • Mine site OTR and earthmover tyres: Haul truck, loader, grader and dozer tyres, including oversized units
  • Commercial and light vehicle tyres: Workshop, depot, transport, and fleet tyres
  • Bulk tyre clean-ups: Accumulated stockpiles cleared and hauled by road train
  • Tyre, poly and rubber shredding: On-site volume reduction and feedstock for recycling
  • Recycling and disposal pathways: Rubber recovered as crumb and tyre-derived product, steel recovered for recycling, landfill as a last resort

Our crews and equipment are based permanently in Kalgoorlie, Leonora and Geraldton, and we offer one-off or regular scheduled collections.

How Tyre Collection and Disposal Works

Most waste tyre disposal is scheduled to coincide with a storage or laydown yard clean-out, or as a regular collection for high-turnover sites. We also provide one-off tyre disposal in Goldfields & Mid-West when the stockpile gets too large. Let us know the type, number and approximate size of your tyres. We’ll mobilise the trucks and shredding equipment (if necessary) to haul them away.

Where practical, the rubber is shredded to create crumb and tyre-derived products used in road surfacing, matting and civil applications, and the steel is recovered for recycling. This keeps tyres out of landfill and supports your ESG and resource-recovery reporting.

Used tyres collected from commercial premises in Western Australia are controlled waste. GCW holds licences for controlled waste categories A to Z with documented disposal pathways that meet all requirements.

How Are Mine Site (OTR) Tyres Disposed Of?

Off-the-road (OTR) tyres from mining haul trucks, loaders, graders and dozers can weigh well over a tonne, which is more than standard equipment can handle. In WA, licensing exemptions have long allowed mining operations to bury end-of-life OTR tyres in voids on site. But ESG expectations and resource-recovery targets are steadily shifting the industry away from burial toward recovery.

Responsible disposal means specialised handling and haulage, on-site shredding to make the load safer and cheaper to move, and delivery to a recycling or disposal pathway with chain-of-custody documentation. GCW provides OTR waste tyre disposal alongside bulk collections for general commercial and light vehicle tyres. Our road trains, crews and equipment are already in the region, including specialised OTR tyre disposal vehicles.

Tyre Disposal FAQs

Do you handle both mine site and commercial tyre disposal?

Yes, GCW disposes of mine site OTR and earthmover tyres at one end of the scale, and general commercial and light vehicle tyres at the other. The handling differs. Oversized OTR tyres need specialist solutions. However, both run through the same collection, shredding and disposal pathways, including a preference for recycling wherever practical.

How do you dispose of mine site OTR tyres?

We collect and handle off-the-road (OTR) tyres from haul trucks, loaders and graders with specialised equipment. Oversized tyres can be shredded on-site to reduce volume before haulage. Tyres are then directed to a recycling or disposal pathway depending on the material, contamination and other factors. We haul by road train from in-region and supply documentation showing where the tyres went.

Can you clear a stockpile of buried or accumulated tyres?

Yes, GCW can clear accumulated tyre stockpiles as a bulk one-off collection, including buried OTR tyres. We have road trains in-region to handle bulk haulage. We can also shred tyres on-site to make them cheaper and safer to move.

Which areas does your waste tyre disposal service cover?

GCW collects tyres across the Goldfields and Mid West from our permanent bases in Kalgoorlie, Leonora and Geraldton. We run regular services through Kalgoorlie, Menzies, Leonora, Laverton, Leinster, Wiluna, Meekatharra, Cue, Newman, and Geraldton, plus the projects and towns in the surrounding areas.

Are used tyres classified as “controlled waste” in Western Australia?

Yes, used tyres transported from commercial premises are listed as controlled waste under WA’s Environmental Protection (Controlled Waste) Regulations 2004. A licensed controlled waste carrier must undertake the transport. Controlled waste tracking requirements also apply to the movement. GCW holds controlled waste licences covering categories A to Z, with documented management and disposal pathways for all controlled waste streams.
